Fun Chair Upholstery Ideas

chair upholstery

When I came across these chairs, I instantly liked the traditional form with the untraditional upholstery. I love the choices of colors and the alternative backs. I found these on coliseum shop and while I cannot possibly afford these, they are indeed great inspiration for a potential antique store find.

Alternative Flooring Ideas

Leather belts flooringI seriously dig Ting’s leather belt floor tiles which I discovered thanks to The Red Chair blog. With this price tag though, I’m more inclined towards this fun DIY. You can make a rug out of leather belts using thrift-store finds. I think this makes for an awesome Christmas present too. Given all the belts and time that would go into making it, it better be someone you really love. Lucky them.

Cloud Lamp

cloud lampRemember the lamps I spotted at Anthropologie in New York? I realized that they resemble the Cloud Lamp by Frank Gehry, which in turn makes me like them even more.

Paper Chains as Interior Decor?

DSC03253

DSC03254

Remember the days of paper chains? This store front inspiration gives me a great holiday decor DIY idea. You can use left over pieces of wrapping paper to make some fun strands. I think for a full effect the thing to do is to create multiple strands. Volume and placement will make or break this home decor DIY.

The paper chain motif also pops up in fashion. What do you think of paper chains now that you’re all grown up? Worthy interior decor? Or maybe just for the holidays?

Doily Placemats from visualingual

doily placemats

Visualingual just shared these screen printed Plexiglas placemats and I have two say that I love them for two reasons. Re-purposing old gas station number signs is a fabulous idea and my love of modern takes on the old doilies spreads far and wide and includes these placemats available through Etsy. Remember these doily rugs? My heart still pitter-patters for them.

Home Organization: Color Coding Books

color coded books

Would you color code your books? I’ve seen a lot of discussions on the topic. From Shelterrific’s post off to Apartment Therapy’s reality check on color coding. The Boston writers clue us in about having to shift the entire set of books row by row whenever adding a book of a particular color. The result of Apartment Therapy’s post off on color coding books reveals the following results: A large number of people arrange their books by means other than color. Color is their second choice, while size is the next most popular consideration. Few arrange their books alphabetically and some use the Dewey Decimal System.

Happy Mundane proposes using color paper to homogenize the look of the books on the shelf in a fun way. I think one of the tricks is to leave extra space on each shelf for future books. You can use the left over space to display cool pottery, vases or other collections. My personal favorite is color coded books arranged in piles and placed on the shelves horizontally instead of vertically. This creates triangles of color and leaves room for book additions. The only trick is that you need a shelf that is wide enough to accommodate a horizontal arrangement. Like the ones seen below from Dwell’s October 09 edition.

Wall Decor or Room Divider DIY

DSC03245

I came across these paper cut out creations mounted on different colors of Plexiglas at the music and arts library in La Jolla, California.

These creations would make for fun wall decor. I love the simple, graphic representations and they just pop out from their colorful backgrounds.

It looks like each piece of Plexiglas is attached to the next with a metal loop. A few strands of these would also make for a fun room divider.

Velocity Art and Design Sale Pick

light boxI love this cool and affordable light box by Roost. It is currently on sale for $145 at Velocity Art and Design. I think it makes for a great upcoming holiday present or wedding gift. I love it both hanging or laying flat. Think of all the cool things that you can illuminate with it. If you’re handy, this is also a great potential DIY. Get a shelf at IKEA, a mountable light and place a frosted glass or acrylic in the middle.

Fornasetti-The Mystery of Lina Cavalieri

DSC03247 DSC03251 DSC03252

Fall is a time of mysteries and intrigue. I’ve been captured by Piero Fornasetti’s images of the woman who captured his imagination. He came across a picture of a 19th century French opera singer in an old magazine. He made a series of 30 black and white plates with a variation on her image and then he went on to create up to 350.

Los Angeles Design School

gallery to the outside

I came across the work of a UCLA former design students called “Line Opening, Corner”. Ghosh set up an installation series which projects what is going on the outside of the gallery onto the walls of the gallery. He thus creates “an intriguing perception of an opening in the architecture and an altered experience of the space.” I studied art at UCLA and if you’re looking for a design school, I highly recommend it.
