Holidays make me think of my favorite movies, friends, loved ones and cozying up in some warm flannel plaids. It just so happens that plaid is a major trend in both fashion and design. Here is some plaid eye candy for your viewing pleasure.

These plaid examples are from Apartment Therapy.

And I love this plaid entryway. Happy Thanksgiving!

These Marimekko plates are fun, but I’m particularly struck by how well black and white stripes work with other colorful patterns. I love observing how multiple patterns work together particularly when they work well.

So I tried my hand at my first trial basket and here’s the result. Because the felt I already had was the thiner type from the fabric store, I decided to double up on the felt and quilt it for sturdiness. I like the quilting effect, but not a fan of the overall shape. What do you think? How do I improve this design?

This Christmas I am determined to make as many Christmas presents as possible. One of the things I’d like to make are felt baskets. For inspiration I browsed and found various design variations. These are my top four picks. The first one with the downturned edges and cut outs for handles is the Netto Felt Basket. The second set is from Pia Wallen. The orange one is available via Remodelista. I have one of the weaved baskets by Design Ideas. I snagged it from Ross, but it is said to have been available through Room and Board in the past.

If you hate to listen to uncle Bernie fighting with auntie Gretta because they’re sitting next to each other at your Thanksgiving swaray, but you don’t want to bust out the formal name place cards you can achieve your desired seating plan with a more subtle and decor-conscious approach. You can write your guest names on leafs, attach a string and loop them around the glass stems on the table.
And enjoy a peaceful, upcoming Thanksgiving!

Have you noticed that black is a big trend in interior design. From walls to accents, to furniture. How do you feel about black couches? You might know that I am planning to re-upholster an old couch in black (here’s the original post and picture) and today I stumbled upon a post on Apartment Therapy about black French style sofas. They spotted a similar one on MetroSofa. MetroSofa’s inventory is definitely worth browsing. There are some loud and otherwise great designs providing new takes on the old.

I spotted this felt ball rug on emmas design blog and thought of my sister in law who is obsessed with felt and is very much a fan of the balls and called me a few months ago to tell me that she purchased a gazillion felt balls online and wanted ideas of something to do with them. Well…I think this is a fabulous idea.
Labor intensive…yes. Fun…yes. Colorful…yes. So…how would you make this? I have a few ideas mainly involving thread and glue.

Nothing says nostalgia like collections of old cameras and suitcases. Beyond collections I like seeing the nostalgic items having a continued function based on what they were originally created for. For example, an old library card organizer serving as storage. The items stored have changed, but it’s storing function persists through-out time. There is a charm to an old charmer still serving its intended purpose, breathing nostalgia into the space. If you’re not into poking around in and out of antique shops, the Sundance catalogue is filled with great nostalgic pieces. You can request one here for inspiration. For an additional read on the role of nostalgia in contemporary design, here is some food for thought from Jessica Helfand. Much like vintage designs, the post is a few years old, but seems timely today.

Do you ever think to yourself, “Babies have it so easy.” Here’s yet another reason to demonstrate my point. A Mawok is a mama friendly baby hammock. I want one for myself, but they don’t come in my size. I’m a few years too old. Additionally I had previously designed a baby hammock in my head, but had no intentions of making it, so I’m really happy to discover that someone has gone and done it! What do you think? Are you jealous of the babies yet?
