Wallpaper Stenciling DIY

So I decided to try and make this stencil and test it out on my walls and here’s the result. I printed a brocade stencil pattern on four sheets of paper. Then I placed strips upon strips of clear packing tape covering the paper front and back with some overlap. Then I took to the exacto knife. It was definitely time consuming to get all the details just right. I used a four inch foam roller to apply the paint on top of the stencil. It is important that the roller be almost dry. Too much paint can get in the way. This would probably be faster with four hands, but if you’re doing this by yourself (as I did), then just use masking tape to hold the stencil in place while you apply the paint and then move it as necessary. I feel like the bedroom looks fresh and new and it actually feels like I’m on vacation in a hotel somewhere. You might also notice that the chair rescue turned new shaggy black stool is now a shaggy black side table. It is almost nest like with that round light on top.

Color Schemes and Nail Color Trends

blue trendy color

Have you noticed that some of the colors that have been prevalent in interior design and fashion are the top nail color trends right now. OPI’s “metro chic” pictured below is the taupe gray that we’ve been seeing a lot of and the “read my palm” is the pastel greenish blue of choice in many modern homes.

Inspirations from the Screen

apartment on Chuck

Otherwise known as hulu in my home. While I don’t have a tv, I do sometimes feel the need to kick back with some hulu. I was feeling sick yesterday and ended up checking out the tv show Chuck, where Chuck is an unlikely and somewhat unwilling spy who is too sensitive to be the typical stoic bond type character. His love interest and fellow spy lives in this adorable apartment. I had to take a snapshot for inspiration. A number of things seem to be from Brocade Home. The mirrored walls remind me of what Gervasoni does with mirrors and furniture. I like the white and silver color scheme with a touch of that beautiful green.

Black and Gold Color Scheme

black paint

Black walls are a huge trend. Do you know anyone who has actually implemented it in their own home? A modern way of pulling off a black and gold color scheme seems to be the fun, new frontier. Here are some examples. By the way I am still so in love with algue and this is a beautiful example of how to enjoy it in front of a non-working fireplace (from Apartment Therapy). And what do you think…is black and gold good for the club or good for the home?

Stripes and Patterns

patterns

These Marimekko plates are fun, but I’m particularly struck by how well black and white stripes work with other colorful patterns. I love observing how multiple patterns work together particularly when they work well.

The Black Couch

black couchHave you noticed that black is a big trend in interior design. From walls to accents, to furniture. How do you feel about black couches? You might know that I am planning to re-upholster an old couch in black (here’s the original post and picture) and today I stumbled upon a post on Apartment Therapy about black French style sofas. They spotted a similar one on MetroSofa. MetroSofa’s inventory is definitely worth browsing. There are some loud and otherwise great designs providing new takes on the old.

Color Schemes: Our Dining Room

[gallery columns="2"]

In lieu of Apartment Therapy’s color contest I am sharing my dining room color scheme. It is white, cream, burnt orange and turquoise with dark wood. I like punches of color in furniture and accents and soothing colors on the walls.

If you’re looking for an easy art piece, I wound some twine around a white canvass and placed it on top of a beach matte on the wall.

If you like the deer head and you want one, let me know and I can paint one for you your color of choice.

Color Schemes: Black, White and Golden Brown

I love the classic white and black color scheme with golden brown wood. The rustic revival look is one of my favorite styles these days. The chunky barn doors, tongue and groove walls and ceilings breathe that antique country feel, in a clean and fresh way.

Here’s a white and wood bathroom and living room with a more dominant white and brown and black accents and coffee table. This living room has a zebra looking rug, which I’m on the fence on when it comes to my personal style, but as a removed viewer, I’d say it works.

Color Schemes

This dining room jumped out at me on Apartment Therapy a few weeks ago and I wanted to highlight the color scheme. That unusual green works wonderfully with the black and white Imperial Trellis and gray ceiling. That very particular part-cinnamon, part-coral-red is the perfect accent for the colder, darker paint colors.

This room has a very controlled feeling and rather stately. It is a good thing it is also eclectic, or it could be too stuffy. The whimsical painting on the wall adds a relaxed, eclectic touch.

Color Schemes: Grey and Taupe with Citrus Accents

What is your latest color obsession? Mine is the combination of grey and taupe with citrus accents. These can be yellow, orange, chartreuse – anything warm and punchy. Remember this side table DIY. This composition has that winning combination.

This Gervasoni collection is satiating my grey craze with some amazing grey furniture. The pieces that incorporate silk screen mirrors are amazing. Check out this armoire and other pieces here. Just type in “gray” in the search window.
