These Marimekko plates are fun, but I’m particularly struck by how well black and white stripes work with other colorful patterns. I love observing how multiple patterns work together particularly when they work well.

In lieu of Apartment Therapy’s color contest I am sharing my dining room color scheme. It is white, cream, burnt orange and turquoise with dark wood. I like punches of color in furniture and accents and soothing colors on the walls.
If you’re looking for an easy art piece, I wound some twine around a white canvass and placed it on top of a beach matte on the wall.
If you like the deer head and you want one, let me know and I can paint one for you your color of choice.
I love the classic white and black color scheme with golden brown wood. The rustic revival look is one of my favorite styles these days. The chunky barn doors, tongue and groove walls and ceilings breathe that antique country feel, in a clean and fresh way.
Here’s a white and wood bathroom and living room with a more dominant white and brown and black accents and coffee table. This living room has a zebra looking rug, which I’m on the fence on when it comes to my personal style, but as a removed viewer, I’d say it works.
This dining room jumped out at me on Apartment Therapy a few weeks ago and I wanted to highlight the color scheme. That unusual green works wonderfully with the black and white Imperial Trellis and gray ceiling. That very particular part-cinnamon, part-coral-red is the perfect accent for the colder, darker paint colors.
This room has a very controlled feeling and rather stately. It is a good thing it is also eclectic, or it could be too stuffy. The whimsical painting on the wall adds a relaxed, eclectic touch.
What is your latest color obsession? Mine is the combination of grey and taupe with citrus accents. These can be yellow, orange, chartreuse – anything warm and punchy. Remember this side table DIY. This composition has that winning combination.
This Gervasoni collection is satiating my grey craze with some amazing grey furniture. The pieces that incorporate silk screen mirrors are amazing. Check out this armoire and other pieces here. Just type in “gray” in the search window.

White is definitely a prevalent color trend. From
CB2 to various books on design, all white with a little bit of an accent color or coupled with wood is quite lovely. I have never been to a home that has a largely white room. Is it tough to keep up, I wonder? Half the battle is keeping my somewhat minimalist apartment…well…minimally cluttered. Which brings me to a lovely alternative.
White and Cream. I have not seen too much of the combo in the States, but it is supposedly quite popular in Norway. Which is interesting considering we have always been told not to mix our whites. I find white and off-white or cream actually quite pleasing to the eye. I think the trick is that the two colors have to be far enough apart in hue.
What a soothing color scheme. Elements of Style has an extensive post on the before and afters from the Canadian HGTV show Colin & Justin’s Home Heist. There are some great transformations and these in particular stood out to me because of the color schemes. I love the natural wood and wicker against the white and sea-foam green-blue. I love everything about the dining room, from colors and objects to their placement. This is the one scheme I have seen in which the IKEA Leran pendant lamp fits seamlessly. Its size and texture is great in that setting. There are some hilarious quizzes on the Colin & Justin website. Check them out.
When I hear powder blue, I think little boy’s nursery. But here is an elegant and grown-up way for powder blue to adorn your room. It looks so chique with the contrasting white and black. Black almost always helps modernize a space. I must admit, I’d prefer to see different lamps (maybe one of these or one of these), but color wise, it totally works.
How soothing…I don’t think you’d get sick of hanging out in this room. The natural light, filtering in from the top left, plays nicely with the powder blue wall and chairs and it almost coats the room in a milky-softness producing a very soothing effect. Although there is a desk, to me this very much says that this is a room for leisure.
When choosing a color for any given space, I ask what the desired function of that space will be. I imagine this living room belonging to someone very gregarious and energetic. This space is very social. This person loves to entertain. They also lead a rich-in-experiences life outside of the home, as is evidenced by the eclectic style. A myriad of objects from the outside world come together in this room. This person needs a level-headed color to anchor this room. After all, you want the guests to stay a while. That is exactly what the cool sea-foam blue does here.
This color scheme from domino mag is both soothing and energizing. The cool blue is calming, while the pea-green is a warming point that entices one to go and lounge there. The golden yellow energizes due to the bright intensity of this yellow hue. A dash of red by the fireplace, and a dash of deep purple flowers reveals this person’s spontaneous nature.
