Chandelier from repurposed materials

My friend Cait, shared this discovery with me. This chandelier by Stuart Haygarth is made out of discarded eye glass lenses. I love the placement of individual lenses such that together they produce the spherical, floating shape. You can apply this same principal to create one yourself out of other materials. Remember these other lamp diy’s? Check them out for inspiration for how materials can come together for a new found function.

Low Hanging Chandeliers

dangling chandeliers

I came upon this apartment tour on Apartment Therapy. The entire place has a great flair, but what stood out to me in particular are the low hanging chandeliers.

I love the idea of cozying up in bed with a low hanging light and a book.

Interchangable Chandelier

chandelierI like the new Wakefield Chandelier from Pottery Barn because it allows you to play with it and make it into whatever you want. The notes are a nice touch, but you can use a number of fun materials. I like the idea of changing the look dramatically from notes, to crystals, to pieces of fabric. They also suggest dried botanicals. Pretty fun. And the price tag? Not too bad at $299.

Lamp DIY

lamp diy

This lamp diy is fun. I spotted it at Le Blog de la Creation. Artist Sarah turner created this lamp by slicing used water bottles for the ReDesign lighting collection. I love that it looks light and airy but is actually plastic. It also reminds me of the dandelion lamp I love so much from IKEA’s PS collection.

Hanging Lamp

canvas lightscanvas lights 2These canvass lights captured my attention at the same Anthropologie in NY as the paper airplanes cluster. This looks like a great DIY to achieve out of left over scraps of fabrics and a great way to introduce some color and eclecticism. Or you can do what Anthropologie did and keep them neutral and airy in light canvass. I love that the shapes are amorphous, so even if you are not a sewing genius, seems like you can’t go wrong!

DIY Light – Paper Airplanes

The cluster of paper airplanes at Anthropologie in NY makes for an ingenious DIY for the home. If you place a light bulb in the middle of the cluster, you will have a fun and inventive light. For safety purposes, you would need to be sure and place a metal cage around the [...]

Birch Tree Lamp and Log Lamp

To add a little taste of nature to your own space, how about these modified tree designs that have DIY written all over them. I am a big fan of birch tree bark lamps and actually prefer them with no wholes and just the thin stripped bark, because it glows amber. But this twist on the design is original and fun too.
The log is nice if you have high enough ceilings to pull it off and if you can find the studs to hang it. I think it would be pretty fun above a dining table. What do you think? Oh and I’m also a fan of the pebble wall behind the log lamp. This is at Amber on Third Avenue and 80th Street in NY – an Asian bistro, sushi bar and lounge. They have some pretty fun drinks and new twists on the old martinis.

DIY Fabric Chandelier!

I sense a trip to Goodwill in the very near future. This Apartment Therapy home tour gave me a great idea for a modern chandelier DIY. I had some stretchy, white fabric that I had been playing with about a year ago and if I stretched it over an old chandelier, I am [...]

Color Schemes: Making Powder Blue work

When I hear powder blue, I think little boy’s nursery. But here is an elegant and grown-up way for powder blue to adorn your room. It looks so chique with the contrasting white and black. Black almost always helps modernize a space. I must admit, I’d prefer to see different lamps (maybe one of these or one of these), but color wise, it totally works.

How soothing…I don’t think you’d get sick of hanging out in this room. The natural light, filtering in from the top left, plays nicely with the powder blue wall and chairs and it almost coats the room in a milky-softness producing a very soothing effect. Although there is a desk, to me this very much says that this is a room for leisure.
