Outdoor Showers Are Here Again

I spotted these great outdoor showers on Apartment Therapy. Remember these from last summer? But what about building your own? Here’s one option from the DIY Network. If you’re not looking for a project and just want it now, this one is simple and it is only 49.99. It seems to me that you can get some pipes from the hardware store and make a really simple one yourself, but I’ve never tried. Maybe next year. Add that to the list of projects for now. Stay cool and if you have an outdoor shower, send me a pic and I’ll post.

Loving the over-sized murals lately. Especially the random and the pop culture relevant. Anime seems perfect for the modern household. This home was Australian 2009 Interior Design Award winner.

Are you doing anything special outside this summer? What about in your yard? I love outside spaces that you can create yourself.

These cozy outside spaces are so lush and inviting. I love colorful rugs outside. Remember this outdoor tent or this awesome Anthropologie photo shoot? Making a cozy outside space sometimes takes integrating some indoor objects. That way you instantly feel at home, wherever you are.

For an indulgent camping experience, don’t deny yourself anything. Not even a bed or a comfy swing chair. This is definitely camping in style.

If you like camping without the dirt, there’s the tear drop camper option. How about building your own camper so you can enjoy the outdoors in style? You can obtain plans here.

Form and Function: Outside Tea Cups

As I turn my thoughts to spring, I am looking at my balcony and dreaming about a new look for this spring. These hanging tea-cups on standing logs are fun. I believe the purpose is for the cups to act as bird feeders. I love the transformed function of the cups, which makes for a lovely and delightful surprise for any garden or outdoor space.

For seating, I came across this awesome retro metal lawn chair. I love the metal lawn chairs and this paint job gives me some fun DIY ideas. Here is a really impressive modern chair on Etsy. My top outdoor seating pick from Etsy is this bench. It looks really well made and I love the shape and the slats.

Outside Spaces

With a new wave of hot temperatures in LA, I am longing for cozy outside spaces. In fact, cozy outside spaces are becoming a new obsession. Here is an example from Sunset magazine that I am currently drooling over.

This tent looks like something that could be used for a Civil War reenactment, but I love it! Where is my saddle? Just kidding. I love the colors and the sturdy wood bed frame and side tables. I think one of the best things about this tent are the windows providing a way for natural light to filter in. I wish I could crawl into that bed and read a book. Don’t you?

Those lamps are perfect for that space and I love how there is a little red cup in the foreground. Don’t you wish it was a steaming cup of hot chocolate waiting for you?

Underwater Sculpture

For a major fan of Anthony Gormley’s work, discovering Jason de Caires Taylor is like continuing the conversation underwater. Jason de Caires Taylor’s underwater sculptures and sculpture park are amazing. These visually haunting installations ooze melancholy, alarming and serene. If you watch the video, the natural elements move around the still figures. These seem both frozen in time and somewhat still alive and looking in on our world from what seems like a time of past civilization. Check out his website for more details, stills, and video.

Modern Outside Seating

I get really excited about outdoor seating and I have been on the lookout for something unique and different. As a result, I’m also noticing a trend. I love these wood, custom built outdoor platforms. I love that they can function as sort of a couch or an outdoor bed. All you have to do is carry your cushions inside and bring them out when you want to use them. Which is also more appealing than having to wipe something every time you’re about to hang outdoors on it.

My husband and I are planning to build one of these in an L-shape (like a modern sectional couch) for the backyard of our mountain cabin. I cannot wait to share the result with you and to enjoy it. I think I will also provide a sort of coffee table and have two folding chairs serve as arm chairs, so the result would be something like this.
