Color Schemes and Nail Color Trends

blue trendy color

Have you noticed that some of the colors that have been prevalent in interior design and fashion are the top nail color trends right now. OPI’s “metro chic” pictured below is the taupe gray that we’ve been seeing a lot of and the “read my palm” is the pastel greenish blue of choice in many modern homes.

Logs and Firewood Made Modern

modern log furnitureI’ve been spotting big trend in firewood and logs being incorporated into modern homes and spaces.

Pictured here are creations by Bleu Nature. I consider them one of the best modern examples of bringing the outdoors in.

I think these log side tables are gorgeous. I absolutely love the pebble inspired coffee table pictured here. The designers’ use of wood and white lacquer creates a beautiful juxtaposition of warm and cool materials (both natural and man made) in a way where the man-made lacquer still breathes nature’s inspiration.

If Bleu Nature is not in your budget, but you’re looking to play with similar outdoor/indoor concepts, I love the more crude, but fun firewood storing bed made out of plywood which I spotted at Anthropologie in Santa Monica. Feeling the need to stay warm this season, or just want to be closer to nature? While this bed is not for sale, I think this is a fun design to steal and make yourself

Felt Coffee Table

felt coffee table

I’ve been feeling rather “feltified” lately and with good reason. I’ve been an appreciator of felt for a long time (flashback to the beginning of the blog), but only recently have I started playing with it.

This is a fun coffee table idea. You can just build a wood box and use spray adhesive to put your felt around it and then put a glass piece on top. I kind of like this for my living room which has not had a coffee table for some time because I have been wanting something with texture and something different from wood or leather or fabric. I will have to determine the right dimensions. I really like the dimensions of these tables.

Fabric Markers in Interior Decor

fabric_painting_sofa

This might just be my new obsession. I don’t yet own any fabric markers, but I’m obsessed with getting some now. I absolutely love the couch with scribbles and have tried to find that image before after seeing it on a design blog a few years ago. I am so pleased to have finally found it. Remember the blog post on wall scribbles? While I’m over doodles and scribbles as a fine art trend, I really like the idea of these creations migrating directly onto walls and furniture. Here are some fabric marker ideas from i do it yourself.

HaPpY Thanksgiving!

Holidays make me think of my favorite movies, friends, loved ones and cozying up in some warm flannel plaids. It just so happens that plaid is a major trend in both fashion and design. Here is some plaid eye candy for your viewing pleasure.

The Black Couch

black couchHave you noticed that black is a big trend in interior design. From walls to accents, to furniture. How do you feel about black couches? You might know that I am planning to re-upholster an old couch in black (here’s the original post and picture) and today I stumbled upon a post on Apartment Therapy about black French style sofas. They spotted a similar one on MetroSofa. MetroSofa’s inventory is definitely worth browsing. There are some loud and otherwise great designs providing new takes on the old.

Nostalgia in Design

old suitcaseold hangerNothing says nostalgia like collections of old cameras and suitcases. Beyond collections I like seeing the nostalgic items having a continued function based on what they were originally created for. For example, an old library card organizer serving as storage. The items stored have changed, but it’s storing function persists through-out time. There is a charm to an old charmer still serving its intended purpose, breathing nostalgia into the space. If you’re not into poking around in and out of antique shops, the Sundance catalogue is filled with great nostalgic pieces. You can request one here for inspiration. For an additional read on the role of nostalgia in contemporary design, here is some food for thought from Jessica Helfand. Much like vintage designs, the post is a few years old, but seems timely today.

Wall Decor

wall decor chalk boardI spotted this beautifully framed chalkboard at an antique store in a little mountain town of Running Springs in Southern California. This is an old mirror frame, with a piece of plywood inside painted with chalkboard paint. If you have a broken mirror, this is a great way to put it to use. I can imagine this looking great in just about any room in the house.

Faux Fireplace and Wood Bench

bench DIYThese are great examples of what a great slab of wood can do when coupled with some eclectic materials.

I love this bench and the idea that this bench has DIY written all over it. This entry way is a part of Apartment Therapy’s home tour of a Boston residence. I am inspired to start collecting different, eccentric legs and see what happens.

faux fireplace

This faux fireplace is another great contribution to Apartment Therapy. This couple stained plywood different colors and glued the entire thing together. They topped the fireplace with a fine piece of wood for an enriching effect. You can see the steps to making the faux fireplace here.

Store Front Decor Inspirations

Black and yellow stripes and sticks! These store front creations are giving me a lot to get excited about. I love the color schemes and the details that went into making them work.

From the sculptural installation above Aldo and how it adds depth to the Kate Spade gold wall that breathes life and energy into the space.

The painted black and white stripes on the side walk pull you into the Kate Spade store from the outside. The sparkley gold wall made up of hundreds of little plastic gold ovals makes the space move, breathe and sparkle. How can you use these concepts in your home?

How about some black and white striped inspiration or some striped hallways or some black, white and yellow color scheme combinations!
