Anthropologie never fails to amaze me with beautiful, simple installations. I love the simplicity of the concept of birds nailed to the wall and floating on the nails.

I also love that they used different types of paper. The subtle color differences help create a sense of texture when you’re looking at the wall as a whole.

The only drawback is this might not be something you want to do unless you know you love it and want it for a while as it is bound to leave some serious nail holes behind.

I spotted this wall installation at a lingerie shop in the Century City mall in LA. What a clever way to show off their merchandise. You can borrow this concept for creating an accent wall in your home by stenciling on a variations on a design of choice.

Distorted Photography as Wall Decor

We’ve all done it. Look through a glass when we drink from it. I loved looking through mine so much this past weekend, that I decided to snap some photos through the glass. Pictured above is a photo of a window and blinds, but with the distortion of shooting the picture through the side of a drinking glass, the image is distorted and blurred in an interesting way, taking on the form of water almost. I think this type of prints would look great in a modern home. If you try it, send me your pics and I’ll post them.

Speakers Book Shelf?

Boombox has captured my heart in more ways than one. Watching this insanely popular SNL short on hulu, the speakers wall caught my eye and sparked an idea for a fun book shelf. What if you stacked old speakers in a haphazard fashion, attached them to your wall, and hallowed some of them out creating spaces to store your books.

Kitschy Wall Mural

I love the kitschy wall mural in the beginning of Parks and Recreation. I can see it looking great with a bright red, modern couch in front of it with strong boxy angles and lines and a gray, wool accent chair. Appropriately, I stumbled on this blog post on seventies nature wall murals. This one is only $65 and while it is not particular kitsch, it represents nature. It still leaves me longing for some kitsch. And bingo! I found the same one! Are you as excited about this as I am? It is only $79 and they are offering a $20 rebate and free paste! My dear friends and loved ones, you know what I want for Christmas.

Picture Frames and Found Objects

Staying with the topic of using old picture frames in a new way. Some store window shopping brings new inspiration. The corner of Barney’s in LA had this display for a few weeks with random found objects placed inside the frames. By way of framing something and putting it on a wall you’re instantly elevating it as an object to look at and observe while instantaneously stripping it of its originally assigned function. Form and function is something I think about a lot in contemporary furniture design and interior design in general. What objects have you seen transformed?

I spotted this beautifully framed chalkboard at an antique store in a little mountain town of Running Springs in Southern California. This is an old mirror frame, with a piece of plywood inside painted with chalkboard paint. If you have a broken mirror, this is a great way to put it to use. I can imagine this looking great in just about any room in the house.

For a texture lover like me, modularArts drywall is very exciting. It makes any accent wall pop and I love the depth created with different lighting techniques for a seductive evening look, or poppin’-bright texture in the light of day.

Don’t have the budget? I can imagine laying down some pieces of plywood, spreading on plaster and texturing it as desired. After it is dry you can put the panels up for your own textured wall look.

The effect is not the same as a continuous piece of drywall, but it can be a great DIY on the cheap. If you repeat the process on both sides, you can have an awesome room divider. Hang it on chains or create a stand.

Free, Green Wall Decor from Repurposed Materials

Picking right up from yesterday’s cardboard inspirations, here is a new idea in repurposing otherwise wasted materials.

You’ve probably seen a trend in expensive 3D wall panels and 3D wallpaper. This is free. All you need to do is ask your local grocer to take their fruit trays off their hands. I just got a box and tried it out in our living room. You can hang them with the rounded side out or the ribbed side out.

These trays generally come in beige and purple. I am thinking of spray painting them red and covering an entire wall in the bedroom for a striking effect. I’ll let you know how it goes. Best part is…if I’m over it one day, it only cost me the price of spray paint.

What’s your two cents? Would you do this? Don’t care? Hate it? Love it? For an alternative, cheap wallpaper look, there’s always newspaper. Also check out this DIY cardboard chair.

Laurie Frankel’s interior photo portfolio has some great examples that prove that wall decor need not cost you much. And if you’re crafty or imaginative, it will cost you nothing.

I love outside of the box thinking when it comes to stuff you can put on walls. By way of being on a wall, the attention is drawn to the object as an object to look and reflect on.

A wispy branch brings beautiful, natural lines and depth to your wall. You can paint it fun colors or leave it natural. You can always light it in an interesting way to cast pretty shadows on the wall.

A wrinkled piece of paper adds texture to your space as well as introducing a natural element. It is a natural element in that it still breathes the life of the trees it came from.
