So I decided to try and make this stencil and test it out on my walls and here's the result. I printed a brocade stencil pattern on four sheets of paper. Then I placed strips upon strips of clear packing tape covering the paper front and back with some overlap. Then I took to the exacto knife. It was definitely time consuming to get all the details just right. I used a four inch foam roller to apply the paint on top of the stencil. It is important that the roller be almost dry. Too much paint can get in the way. This would probably be faster with four hands, but if you're doing this by yourself (as I did), then just use masking tape to hold the stencil in place while you apply the paint and then move it as necessary. I feel like the bedroom looks fresh and new and it actually feels like I'm on vacation in a hotel somewhere. You might also notice that the chair rescue turned new shaggy black stool is now a shaggy black side table. It is almost nest like with that round light on top.

I got these new dining chairs at IKEA for about 20 each. I painted the legs red and I feel like it makes them look like something different and original. IKEA meets DIY equals awesome in my book. This little windowshopping experience revealed this fun wall and it reminded me of Mike Miller's wall art at West Elm.

I'm used to seeing black silhouettes on white backgrounds and these example of inverse silhouettes are a great way to bring in natural or neutral tones. I love cream and black together.

Did you know that Sebastian John Ross is known as the "Silhouette Man." He devoted his life to creating silhouettes. Here is a great tribute to him and his work.

I spotted these great outdoor showers on Apartment Therapy. Remember these from last summer? But what about building your own? Here's one option from the DIY Network. If you're not looking for a project and just want it now, this one is simple and it is only 49.99. It seems to me that you can get some pipes from the hardware store and make a really simple one yourself, but I've never tried. Maybe next year. Add that to the list of projects for now. Stay cool.

I spotted these great outdoor showers on Apartment Therapy. Remember these from last summer? But what about building your own? Here’s one option from the DIY Network. If you’re not looking for a project and just want it now, this one is simple and it is only 49.99. It seems to me that you can get some pipes from the hardware store and make a really simple one yourself, but I’ve never tried. Maybe next year. Add that to the list of projects for now. Stay cool and if you have an outdoor shower, send me a pic and I’ll post.
Walking by the Louis Vuitton store at the Century City mall, their window display caught my eye. I love the idea that you could even take a shoe box, paint it white, and then add the details of an old suitcase. And voila, you have cool, modern storage that hearkens back to days of old.

I've had this Wassily chair for a number of years. I had inherited it from the previous apartment dweller when it was missing most of its stretch panels. I had sewn new panels, took the chair apart and put them on. This was quite a feat. After a few years and my nephew's desire to hang off of the panels, I was facing the possibility of taking everything apart all over again. I started brainstorming possibilities for easier management. I've been feeling a need for natural fibers in my living room and I have long been in love with
And in case you're wondering, it is holding up great. The sum of the jute strands together make for a pretty sturdy seat and if one or two of the strands break, I weaved them separately such that there will still be others for support. One of the best parts about it is the ease of replacing any broken parts versus the major hassle of taking apart the entire chair as I had previously done.

We've all done it. Look through a glass when we drink from it. I loved looking through mine so much this past weekend, that I decided to snap some photos through the glass. Pictured above is a photo of a window and blinds, but with the distortion of shooting the picture through the side of a drinking glass, the image is distorted and blurred in an interesting way, taking on the form of water almost. I think this type of prints would look great in a modern home. If you try it, send me your pics and I'll post them.
